On Finishing

I have a collection of canvases that hover in various states of completion. I select individual pieces from this group and set them out so I can watch them while I'm working on paintings that have specific direction. Sometimes I can see exactly what these incomplete works need. These two studies came together like that . . . on the periphery. I do like to finish.

A Brief Summary of Floral Abstraction

This painting has exceptional history. It began its career in the tradition of a somewhat predictable horizontal landscape, with pretty green foreground grasses, nondescript shrubbery, and a cloudy sky that never seemed entirely appropriate with the overall illumination of the scene. It sat this way for several months before it was subsequently interrupted by a series of fast black brushy maneuvers that emerged in response to my spontaneous vision for more bold organic abstracts. Upon further review, it became apparent that the ultimate objective for this piece would  arrive in the form of an abstract floral, intimated loosely by the definition of bloom, vase, and obscure interior artifacts—and further offset by the layered application of transparent oil and deep varnish. There is also evidence of mixed media buried in the layers, and I have no idea where that came from.

One of three in process (60 x 48). The feeling of a place. A summer afternoon. Warm with a slight breeze.
